This is some of the enormous park of the Versailles castle. This is the closest part from the castle and you can mainly see french gardens ("Jardins à la française") and fountains. You can also find many antiquity styled sculptures, which was an art standard during the Renaissance time. Also most of the fountains have a theme related to the roman gods.
Nowadays those fountains are constantly active and huge amount of pressured water is "exploding" in the air. But it used to be different, in fact, works were done to bring water from higher rivers miles away using a complex system of aqueducts. But anyway there wasn't enough water and pressure to power every fountains at once. So when the king and his guests were walking through the gardens they were powering only the fountains closest to the king and kept changing the ones powered throughout his walk.
Finally this part of the park has a lot of "corridors of trees" they were convenient for some discreet and secret conversations between for example the king and his mistress, favorite, minister or any courtesan.
