Savoir Vivre ( @sv.home )
31 years ago today, Minnie ‘Winnie’ Marneres died. I’m grateful to have known her in my childhood and will never forget her perfectly-coiffed pearl white hair that precisely matched her elegant, always-pressed, monochromatic long linen jackets over flowing wide-leg trousers, her ever-present smoldering-in-slow-motion Virginia Slim cigarettes, and her delight for touring paddock stables, attending a day at the horse races, and seeing a bouquet of freshly-cut roses in her favorite Kentucky Derby velvet red color. I’m also grateful to have not only benefitted from but largely inherited her legacy of loving the excitements of life and beautiful, fine things through my common touchstone with her niece and namesake, my late grandmother Winnie Atherton, who was a great lady in her own right, very much in the gracious style of her beloved aunt. Moreover, I’m so proud to be from my mother’s family of strong, independent women, each of whom have always known their minds, taken responsibilities to task, suffered no fools, and perspicaciously changed the fortunes and futures of families, both their own and others around them, with their unusual abilities, will, and love. I remember learning at school, in an early grade, that some people think women are inferior to men. And I distinctly recall wondering, in total disbelief, which women these men were talking about because I had never known a woman who was inferior to anyone! Sometimes, it’s takes getting a little older to realize our full range of advantages in life, doesn’t it?
