Love Beyond Borders Podcast ( @kelli.fm )
We saw each other every weekend. He’d come to Curitiba and stay with me or I’d take the bus to see him. We did that for four months until he was able to find a job in Curitiba so he could move there.
It was around that time that my parents came to visit us for the first time. I was overjoyed to see them. It had been a year and a half since we’d seen each other and it was my dad’s first time meeting Tiago. We had an absolute blast showing them around and introducing them to Tiago’s family. My Portuguese had come a long way so I did a lot of interpreting. It was so sweet to see the way Tiago doted on my parents, making sure they were taken care of and enjoying every moment.
We showed my parents everything we loved about life in Brazil while going out of our way to hide the reality of our living situation. We were barely getting by and the area where we lived was dangerous. Brazil has high levels of violent crime and our neighborhood was no different. Sure, things can happen anywhere and in any country, but this was on a level I had never experienced before. Someone had been shot and killed in a carjacking on our street in broad daylight, one morning we woke up to the news of a burning body just around the corner, the bakery down the hill from us was discovered to be a cover for an illicit drug operation, people were robbed at gun and knifepoint at all times of day, and the list goes on and on.
Our friends and family have told countless stories of robbery, assault and crimes committed against them and their loved ones. Two different families near and dear to us were tied up in their homes and held at gunpoint while their homes were ransacked. There was no sure way to stay safe. I tried not to live in fear, but my fear got the most of me many times. I was so afraid that something would happen to my parents while they were visiting. I wanted to warn them, but I knew If I did, they'd worry about leaving me when it came time for them to go back home.
