Heritage Series : Isabelle
I was pleasantly surprised at the diversity in the community I now call home has to offer. Being a new immigrant, I had begun to look back at my own roots. I met Isabelle through her lovely mother Jeanette, who is a strong pillar in the Filipino Community in Edmonton. As I explained to her and Isabelle the concept of the image, we talked about how, as a young lady of mixed race, Isabelle was always, in Jeanette's words, fascinated by this dichotomy of her identity.
Isabelle's families are from the Philippines and the West Indies (Guyana and Trinidad). On the left, Isabelle wears a mixture of styles reminiscent of the West Indies' traditional Madras and on the right she wears a Philippine Formal called the Barong Tagalog. Beautifully, we were able to make her skin tone in the Philippine side darker instead of the other way around as another twist to our story: she looks almost kayumanggi (the Filipino term for the brown south east asian skin tone) in the side where she wears the West Indies Madras, while she has the deeper hues when she wears the Barong.
I am still in the process of digging into my own heritage. If you would like to go on this journey with me and explore your own roots and ancestry with a fine art portrait, please feel free to send me a message!
